Ritwik Ghatak’s melodramatic movies are like visual poetry pieces, and if you haven’t watched any of them, you are missing out on something as a cinephile.
‘Titas Ekti Nadir Naam’ is one of the finest and most popular movies made by Ghatak and it received international acclaim. The movie is adapted from Advaita Mallabarman’s novel of the same name, and tells the age-old tale of anguish, suffering and pain of love and life.
Titas Ekti Nadir Naam tells the story of a fisherman who is married to a girl in one of his visits to a nearby village. But his wife is soon kidnapped by goons. The wife realizes that she does not even know her husband properly and she is not able to think of some way of escaping. The river Titas itself is one of the major characters in the movie and has its presence felt throughout. The movie is two hours and thirty nine minutes long but it does not bore you, instead, it transcends you to the painful Titas.
The movie was released in 1973 and had a cast of actors like Rosy Afsari, Rawshan Zamil, Kabori Sarwar, Prabir Mitra etc. Ritwik Ghatak himself played the role of Tilakchand. The music of the movie was composed by Ghatak and Ustad Bahadur Khan.
‘Titas Ekti Nadir Naam’ or ‘A River Called Titas‘ is counted among the finest films ever made in India. You will love it if you are a fan of art films or great regional films. Watch ‘A River Called Titas’ with your friends and family this weekend on Hoichoi.
