A24 and Jonathan Glazer make a rare but consistently impressive pairing. Nearly a decade ago, Glazer teamed up with A24 to create his last feature, “Under The Skin,” which became somewhat of a late bloomer.
This time, they have something highly promising on their hands: “The Zone of Interest,” a Holocaust drama based on Martin Amis’ book of the same name from 2014.
This German-language Holocaust drama tells the poignant story of Rudolf Höss, a real-life German SS officer, and his wife Hedwig, who raised their children in a farmhouse adjacent to Auschwitz.
With actors like Christian Friedel as Rudolf, Sandra Hüller as Hedwig, along with Daniel Holzberg, Ralph Herforth, and Sascha Maaz, this film is brimming with immense potential.
In line with the novel, this drama doesn’t just uncover the complexities of the events but also delves deep into human nature. Even the source material contains elements of humor and satire that might be reflected in the adaptation.
The trailer successfully conveys a sense of mystery and a dystopian mindset that will carry over to the final product. It also offers some stunning visuals with a washed-out color palette that will capture your imagination.
During the Cannes press conference, Glazer expressed that the greatest crime and tragedy lie in human beings’ actions towards each other. He pointed out how people tend to distance themselves from such actions, often believing they wouldn’t behave similarly.
However, he suggested that one should be less certain about this assumption, and this thought-provoking perspective is reflected in the film’s themes.
Scheduled for a U.S. premiere on December 8, “The Zone of Interest” was produced by James Wilson and Ewa Puszcyńska. It also had an executive production team that included Reno Antoniades, Len Blavatnik, Danny Cohen, Tessa Ross, Ollie Madden, Daniel Battsek, and David Kimbangi.
