Aamir Khan is going all out to promote his new film Sitaare Zameen Par and is firmly standing by his decision to make the film a theater-based experience. He’s made it very clear that he believes films are meant to be enjoyed on the big screen, with OTTs being a secondary alternative. His passion for cinema halls is admirable, especially at a time when OTT platforms are dominating the way we consume movies. But while his stand is bold, it also comes with risk.
The truth is, Sitaare Zameen Par is not a massive event film like the ones people usually rush to see in theaters nowadays. Audiences have changed, and with so many options on OTT platforms, many prefer to wait and watch movies from the comfort of their homes. OTT has become a powerful medium, and that can’t be denied. In fact, many films that flopped in theatres found love online.
Aamir Khan may be trying to bring back the theatre culture, which is noble, but it could also be a case of overconfidence. We’ve seen other filmmakers take the same route, thinking their film will draw crowds, only for it to backfire badly. Not every film, no matter how well made, is made for a theatrical run in today’s world.
So while Aamir’s intentions are good and rooted in love for cinema, it remains to be seen if the gamble will pay off. One thing is sure, he’s is confident in his endeavour, and now, the audience will decide the rest.
