Disney Plus Hotstar is all set to release the musical film ‘Spin’ on its platform on 15th August. It is Disney Studios’ first film featuring an Indian American girl in the lead. For those not in the know, Spin is a film set in the backdrop of music. A young Indian-American teenager discovers a flare for creating beats, even as she falls for the aspiring DJ who teaches her the art. Abhay Deol plays the father of the teenaged girl, Rhea, played by Avantika Vandanapu.
The film beautifully depicts the blending of two cultures through shared passions. It’s a coming-of-age film that shows that you can embrace your culture and yet be so many different things, that you don’t need to give up on your inherent identity to belong. The movie highlights various topics such as representation of South Asians, family and more.
What stands out in the film is that handsome hunk actor Abhay Deol agreed to play father to a teenager in the film. The actor chooses his films carefully, and is known for staying away from the typical Bollywood masala films. Yet, one wonders what compelled Abhay Deol to agree to play a father in Spin, and of an older teenager too.
The reason is heartwarming, to say the least. When asked about it, this is what Abhay Deol has to say,
“I loved the script, but more than anything else, what came out the most was the fact that this was Disney’s first film based on an Indian American family. I have my sisters, nephews and nieces growing up there and I felt this is an important film for them. If only they saw it growing up, they would’ve felt that they belong”.
“The fact that Disney was taking the lead in producing diversifying content was exciting. Disney peeled through and unravelled many layers and they did it in this beautiful, simple way”, he adds.
Spin has been helmed by Manjari Makijany, who had earlier made another heartwarming coming-of-age film, Skater Girl. An Independence Day special, ‘Spin’ will premiere at 12 pm on Disney International HD and Disney+ Hotstar Premium on August 15th, 2021.
