To say that Marvel’s forthcoming animated series ‘What If…?’ is a star-studded affair would be a grave understatement. As you might already know that the ‘What If…?’ anthology series chronicles multiple alternate scenarios if some important events in Marvel movies had happened in a different way. The series would be narrated by Jeffrey Wright, who will be essaying the role of The Watcher who observes the multiverse.
Some of the voice cast members for the series were announced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige way back in the year 2019. There were some exciting names in the line-up, but fans were also disappointed by the omission of some other big names.
Amongst some prominent names who were confirmed to voice-act for their respective characters included Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Chris Hemsworth as the mighty Thor, Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Sebastian Stan as James Bucky Barnes, Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.
As you can observe here that some of the cornerstone characters like Iron Man and Captain America originally played by Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans respectively were missing from the list of voice actors at that time. They would be voiced by different actors in ‘What…If?’.
Recently, it was reported that Scarlett Johansson and Tom Holland would also not be lending their voices for Black Widow and Spiderman, respectively. Amongst some other important absentees from the voice cast are Brie Larson as Captain Marvel and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. However, the addition of Benedict Cumberbatch as the dark version of Doctor Strange has got many Marvel aficionados excited.
Also included in the truly ensemble voice cast of ‘What If…?’ are Benedict Wong as Wong, Benecio Del Toro as The Collector, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Evangeline Lilly as Wasp, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Tilda Swilton as The Ancient One, Kurt Russel as Ego, Paul Bettany as Vision, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, and, of course, Tom Hiddleston as Loki.
The much-anticipated animated anthology series is expected to start streaming from 11th August 2021 onwards on the Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar OTT platforms.
