Om Raut’s ambitious mythological action movie ‘Adipurush’ was released in theatres around two months back, but the film suffered from widespread negative word of mouth on social media platforms and was mired in controversies. Many movie goers were disappointed with the film’s execution and other aspects. And the film wasn’t apparently profitable on the box office front as well.
And just a few hours back, ‘Adipurush’ has sprung a surprise as it has suddenly started streaming simultaneously on not one but two OTT platforms. The Hindi version of ‘Adipurush’ is currently streaming on Netflix while on Amazon Prime Video, the film has been made available for streaming in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam languages.
Now, the most interesting thing to see would be whether or not ‘Adipurush’ attracts OTT audiences in a big way, considering the backlash it received after its theatrical release a couple of months back.
Or in other words, can ‘Adipurush’ replicate the OTT success of a film like, say, ‘Vikram Vedha’ Hindi remake, which also underperformed as far as its theatrical performance is concerned. However, ‘Vikram Vedha’ starring Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan turned out to be a huge hit when it made its OTT premiere on Jio Cinema in May 2023.
But the big difference between ‘Adipurush’ and ‘Vikram Vedha’ is that the former received negative feedback from many viewers and critics while the latter garnered mostly positive reviews. ‘Adipurush’ currently holds a user rating of just 3.2/10 on IMDb. So, it would be quite interesting to see whether ‘Adipurush’ can become a hit on OTT despite the film’s insipid feedback.
An adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana, Om Raut’s ‘Adipurush’ features Prabhas (as Adipurush / Lord Ram), Saif Ali Khan (as Lankesh / Ravana), Kriti Sanon (as Janaki / Goddess Sita), Sunny Singh as Lakshmana, and Devdatta Nage as God Hanuman / Bajrang.
