Remember when Netflix finally decided to shift to ad-supported plans after suffering a big deal from subscribers’ loss? Although it was against their own practices and even the loyal subscribers were not happy with it, people have little say in whatever the higher authorities decide.
But when reports about cheaper ad-supported tiers started popping up then it was appreciated by almost every section be it media or even the audience.
Netflix decided to bring ad-supported tiers which would be almost half the price of their existing price of $14.99/month. While the existing ad-free plan would remain unaffected. Also, the report said that they would not be pushing ads on everything. Only series would face ads while films will remain ad-free. That too, the ads will be of a mere 4 minutes for 1 hour of streaming.
But surprise surprise.
Netflix has discarded all these plans as mere speculation after about 5 days of running in the news. It is clearly understood that they might be bringing plans which are not as great as the prospect sounded.
“We are still in the early days of deciding how to launch a lower-priced, ad-supported tier, and no decisions have been made. So this is all just speculation at this point”, Netflix said.
This is really baffling for subscribers who stuck to Netflix when the company always ranted about their policy to never bring ads.
It would be better if Netflix either quashed the report as a rumor or remained silent about it. Labeling it as speculation leaves people on a cliffhanger where they can’t figure out if the actual plan will be more expensive or not.
