The prehistoric era is definitely having a historic run at this year’s box office. “Godzilla vs. Kong” became a global phenomenon, and now “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is running wild in the box office. Let’s dive into the stats, shall we?
With a solid debut and surpassing expectations, the new Planet of the Apes film managed to rank at the number one spot for the week. The expectation was around $50M, but it grossed around $56.6M in the domestic box office this weekend. Talking about the international market, $72.5M sounds like music to the ears of the makers.
The total market was around $129M, which is a good starting point. And not only are the numbers impressive, but the film is also receiving solid reviews—81% on Rotten Tomatoes or 7.3 on IMDb. It might be nostalgia or good content, but fans are loving it.
“The Fall Guy” fell to the second spot with $13.7M, experiencing a 51% drop overall. Despite grossing $100M worldwide, the film became an unsung hero. However, covering the $140M budget might prove challenging; it may just break even.
Zendaya’s hot sports venture “Challengers” secured the third place with $4.6M this week, appreciated by fans and gaining major attention. But with the indie tag and a high $55M budget, it will need a solid OTT run as the theatrical run alone can’t save it.
“Tarot” claimed the fourth spot, loving the horror genre. With a small $8M budget, the film grossed $3.4M in its second week, totaling $20M globally. It was followed by “Godzilla vs. Kong,” grossing $2.5M after its phenomenal theatrical run. Godzilla and Kong will now slowly fade away after their strong start.
