The Indian government, especially the I&B Ministry, is trying to enter the world of entertainment. The OTT regulations were already causing stress among OTT platforms, and now the government is entering the arena of content creation.
The Ministry has clarified that the authority to regulate digital broadcasting will shift from the IT Ministry to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB).
The MIB assured stakeholders that existing broadcasting regulations will be integrated into the new Broadcasting Services Regulation (BSR) bill, eliminating overlapping laws.
Currently, digital news, social media platforms (like Meta and Google), and streaming platforms (like Netflix and Amazon Prime) are regulated under the IT rules. Under the new bill, the MIB will assume regulatory authority over these digital broadcasts.
A recent update states that the Ministry will focus on building a big-budget studio.
What is the budget, you ask?
₹10,000 crores.
An investment like this will change the scenario in Indian entertainment, as it will not only create jobs but also take India to the doorsteps of global entertainment, making it one of the strongest contenders.
Regarding job creation, the government is promising to create one million jobs. Notably, 500,000 of these jobs are expected to be high-salary positions, ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹300,000 per month.
On paper, it looks promising, but this effort will not only take time; delivering on these promises will be a difficult thing to execute.
