It’s not every day that we see an Indian film gaining a spot on a popular international movies’ portal alongside Hollywood biggies. So, when a well-made Indian movie makes it on a global movie ranking list, it should be appreciated and applauded.
Last Friday, a Tamil language Indian crime thriller movie was released in theatres. And the same film has now cracked the coveted international list of the top 50 movies on Auckland-based movies-centric social platform Letterboxd (from the year 2023). And the movie is none other than ‘Por Thozhil’.
‘Por Thozhil’ has not only made its way into the Letterbox top 50 movies list, but it has done it in style. The film is currently placed on the Letterboxd list on Rank 31. And in doing that, the movie is now ahead of some other Indian films like ‘Vaalvi’ (Rank 44) and ‘2018’ (Rank 46). As of now, the only Indian film which is ahead of ‘Por Thozhil’ is another well-crafted Tamil crime thriller – Vetrimaaran’s ‘Viduthalai Part 1’ (Rank 13).
‘Por Thozhil’ follows the story of an academically brilliant but weak hearted crime branch trainee Prakash (Ashok Selvan), who must work under the mentorship of a senior cop Loganathan (Sarath Kumar). The rookie cop must overcome his weaknesses and team up with his senior in order to solve a mysterious murder case where it is revealed that a psychopath killer is on the loose. The movie is directed by Vignesh Raja in his feature film directorial debut. ‘Por Thozhil’ has got good reviews from critics and currently holds an appreciation score of 9.5/10 on movie ticketing portal BookMyShow.
The Letterboxd top 50 narrative films list 2023 has been topped by the animated superhero flick ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ (Rank 1), followed by the romantic drama movie ‘Past Lives’ (Rank 2), Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ (Rank 3), James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3’ (Rank 5) and Keanu Reeves’ blockbuster action extravaganza ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ (Rank 7), etc.
