In a true crime documentary, Netflix has allegedly used some Images that were generated by Artificial Intelligence. The documentary is titled ‘What Jennifer Did’ and it premiered on the platform on the 10th of April this year.
‘What Jennifer Did’ tells the shocking story of Jennifer Pan, a Vietnamese immigrant in Canada, whose whole family was shot down by unknown intruders one day. Jennifer Pan called the police and was the center of all media suddenly. But as the investigation went on, shocking secrets were revealed and the whole story had to be revised from a different perspective.
Audiences have pointed out that some still photos of Jennifer Pan used in the documentary were actually AI generated. Netflix did not give credit to any AI application for the images, nor did it accept the allegations. In some of the images, it is seen that the fingers are numbered differently, sometimes a finger is completely absent, which happens with AI generated images.
Audiences have been reacting with much anger to the issue. For them, a true crime documentary is all about authenticity and it is a breach of authenticity to use fake and AI generated photos. While there are still no clear rules about using such images in movies and shows, doing so in a true crime documentary really crosses the line.
