As soon as the Maharashtra government announced the reopening of cinema theatres from 22nd October, it’s been raining film announcements for Bollywood! The busiest actor in Bollywood, Akshay Kumar was quick to announce his string of theatrical releases, starting with ‘Sooryavanshi’ on Diwali 2021, followed by ‘Prithviraj’ on 21st January, ‘Bachchan Pandey’ on 4th March, ‘Raksha Bandhan’ on 11th August, ‘Ram Setu’ on Diwali 2022, as well as ‘Oh My God 2’ towards the end of 2022. His only film left to set a release date was ‘Atrangi Re‘, which is now all set to have a direct-to-OTT release!
We have learnt that the Aanand L Rai helmed ‘Atrangi Re’ also starring Sara Ali Khan and south star Dhanush is all set to premiere on Netflix. Post the barrage of theatrical releases, fans were wondering why there was no update on ‘Atrangi Re’, since filming for the movie has been completed and it is ready for release. In actuality, the makers were considering a direct-to-OTT release and in talks with several platforms for the same.
“To be honest, I haven’t yet included Atrangi Re in the list because we are still mulling over whether it should be a theatrical film or an OTT release. And OTT may simply be the medium of choice for Atrangi Re, as it looks right now”, said Akshay Kumar to a prominent media publication, confirming the film’s digital release earlier today. He added, “Atrangi Re has a fantastic, never-heard-before subject and story line. For me and Anand Rai, it is critical that the most suited platform is chosen for the film. I am as much for OTT as for theatres. What’s best for the film should decide the medium of release.”
For the unversed, ‘Atrangi Re’ is reportedly a cross-cultural love story set in Bihar and Madurai. The plot of the film follows a non-linear narrative of two romances from different timelines running parallelly. Actress Sara will be romancing both Dhanush and Akshay in two different time zones. Well, we look forward to the film’s release, for which an official announcement is expected anytime soon along with the release date.
