Akshay Kumar‘s action entertainer with Rohit Shetty ‘Sooryavanshi’ is the talk of the town nowadays. Specially after the government’s orders of increasing the theatres and cinema halls’ capacity to a full 100%. Sooryavanshi will become the first major Hindi language movie to release in theatres after the span of a whole year. Now with it’s release coming nearer, the producers of Sooryavanshi have put forth several demands to the exhibitors and it seems that they are trying to pull of what Vijay’s ‘Master’ did, both in theatres and in streaming platforms.
Sooryavanshi, which was supposed to release last year was postponed due to COVID-19, but the director actor duo of Rohit Shetty and Akshay Kumar decided against the trendy fashion of OTT release for their movie and pleged to release their movie only in theatres. And with the delay, Sooryavanshi has incurred several losses during the period of a whole year and thus, makers are eyeing the best possible deal with the exhibitors so that they can easily cover their costs.
But now in a recent development, the makers of Sooryavanshi demanded for a 4 week OTT release window from the exhibitors. This means that post the release of the movie in theatres, after 4 weeks or 28 days the makers are permitted to release the movie in streaming platforms. Now this brings back very recent memories from Kollywood. Yes we are talking about Vijay’s ‘Master’ which was released on Amazon Prime Video just 16 days after it’s theatrical release and whilst the movie was running in theatres. As expected the movie did well in the streaming platform as well as in theatres. But will Sooryavanshi replicate the same fate?
To be honest its really difficult for a Bollywood movie to do exceedingly well in the middle of the pandemic. Even though the vaccines are out, the audience of North India are different and less devoted to their stars and idols as compared to South India. Plus, Master was the biggest movie to release in theatres at that time and with the fan following Thalapathy Vijay enjoys, it was bound to earn footfalls.
One might argue that Master too was released on OTT in a short period of time and within 16 days it did enough business. And hence it might also work for Sooryavanshi. But that’s not completely correct. At the time of Master’s release as we said earlier, it was the biggest movie and the makers did not announced their plans to release the movie in OTT beforehand like Sooryavanshi.
And thus, it makes people wonder that there will be this air of doubt that why should a person go to watch the movie in theatres when they know that the movie will be releasing soon enough in the OTT platforms, within weeks to be precise?
But still, it totally depends on how the movie fares among the audience and critics. If the movie is received well, then only sky is the limit for a big entertainer like Sooryavanshi!
