The trailer for Akshay Kumar’s upcoming movie ‘Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue’ has been released on social media this afternoon. The film hits theatres on 6th October, 2023.
Many unsung heroes are lost in the annals of history, mostly because their heroic deeds find no representation in popular culture. One such unsung hero of India is Jaswant Singh Gill, whose tale of heroism will finally be documented in Akshay Kumar’s ‘Mission Raniganj’.
The film is a biopic of the braveheart mining officer Jaswant Singh Gill, whose inventive thinking and relentless courage saved the lives of 64 miners trapped deep in the coalfields of Raniganj. Akshay Kumar plays Gill in ‘Mission Raniganj’.
Back in November 1989, a massive tragedy took place in the Mahabir Colliery in Raniganj, West Bengal. As miners blasted the coal mines to extract coal, the water table burst, leading to heavy flooding in the mines. More than a hundred miners were extracted immediately, but 65 remained trapped below, amidst heavy floodwaters. Jaswant Singh Gill was the Additional Chief Mining Engineer of Coal India Limited (CIL) at that time.
With all avenues for rescue exhausted, Gill hit upon a brilliant, out-of-the-box idea. He drilled a hole, and a specially crafted steel capsule on-site was lowered into the mines, with Gill inside. He single-handedly rescued all the 65 trapped miners, and only then came out from the pit. The rescue hit headlines across the world, especially due to the unconventional manner of rescue.
Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, who’s earlier directed Akshay Kumar’s ‘Rustom’. The film is produced by Pooja Entertainment. It stars Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra in the leads, along with a huge ensemble cast, comprising Kumud Mishra, Pavan Malhotra, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Mukesh Bhatt, Akshay Verma, Ishtiyak Khan, Dinesh Lamba, Virendra Saxena, Ravi Kishan, Varun Badola, Shishir Sharma, Ananth Mahadevan, Jameel Khan, Sudhir Pandey, among others.
