2021 is turning out to be the year of controversies for Indian film & television fraternity. The year started with Amazon Prime content Tandav facing backlash citing religious angle, and now amidst the ongoing controversy over the depiction of Tamil people in The Family Man Season 2, a new controversy began shrouding another movie. This time, it’s Akshay Kumar‘s long awaited project Prithviraj which is under fire.
Earlier yesterday, the maker of the historical drama based on Prithviraj Chauhan received threats from Karni Sena over the title of the movie. The president of Youth Wing of the organization said, “How can they keep the title of the film as just Prithviraj when the film is based on the great Prithviraj Chauhan? We want the title to be changed to his full name and give respect to him.” Co-incidentally, Karni Sena was also the same organization which vandalized the sets of Padmavati in 2016 along with assaulting the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali over a few claims on the film. Bhansali had to change the name of the film from Padmavati to Padmaavat, back then.
Karni Sena went further ahead and warned the maker of Prithviraj to be prepared for the consequences if their demands are not met just like the things that happened with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. They have also demanded that the makers must screen the film for them first before releasing it for wider audiences.
Prithviraj, based on Prithviraj Raso, a Braj Bhasha epic poem about the life of Prithviraj Chauhan, is been the development hell for almost 11 years as the director of the film, Chandraprakash Dwivedi was working on the script from 2010. Finally in 2018, Yash Raj film came to rescue the film and it was finally announced that Prithviraj is officially a ‘go’. Since then the film stopped several times due to pandemic surge in the country which further pushed the release of the film by November 2021. And now, this controversy is bound to dent the release of the film for sure.
Apart from Akshay Kumar, the film will feature an ensemble cast of Manushi Chhillar, Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood, Manav Vij along with Ashutosh Rana, Sakshi Tanwar and Lalit Tiwari amongst others.
The makers of Prithviraj have made any official statement yet, but we can only hope that the film can release on time with no controversies surrounding it.
