Yash Raj’s Samrat Prithviraj has become a dud at the box office. The latest Akshay Kumar starrer has barely minted 65.5 crores in India and 6.3 overseas against a staggering budget of 200 crores. Thus, it also became the actor’s second flop in the row after Bachchan Pandey.
Samrat Prithviraj earned most of its collection in its opening weekend. But it performed poorly due to poor marketing, simplistic tone, not-so-impressive performances, and a strong competition from Karthik Aryan’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. Plus, the film’s low occupancy led towards the cancellation of shows in theatres.
But we know that a big-budget dud usually gets an early OTT release. In 2021, Amazon Prime Video bagged the streaming rights of Kumar’s historical drama along with Bunty Aur Babli 2, Jayeshbhai Jordaar, and Shamshera. It was an open-ended contract that allowed YRF to release these projects on Prime Video after 4-8 weeks of their theatrical releases, based on their box office performances. We have seen Bunty Aur Babli 2 and Jayeshbhai Jordaar arriving way too early on OTT. The same may happen to Samrat Prithviraj as well. The film may come on Amazon Prime Video within or just after 4 weeks of its theatrical release.
Samrat Prithviraj’s cast consists of Akshay Kumar, Manushi Chhillar, Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood, Ashutosh Rana, Sakshi Tanwar, Manav Vij, and many more. Chandra Prakash Dwivedi served as the movie’s helmer. It hit the theatres on June 3. Stay tuned for more updates.
