Alex Garland’s Civil War: The Most Controversial Film Of 2024?

Alex Garland’s Civil War is a product of A24’s strategy to offer more mainstream content, along with bestowing audiences with high-quality indie projects. The film’s production budget has reached nearly $50 million, making the movie the most expensive project in A24’s history. As per Deadline, the upcoming Alex Garland film is expected to collect $18-24 million in its opening weekend, an impressive figure range that teases a bright future for the film. However, many critics and publications have declared the movie as one of the most controversial movie projects of 2024. Here’s why!

Despite being a political film, Civil War does not pick any side. In other words, the movie does not consider the conventional approach of the left vs right ideologies. It does not choose or show support for any particular political party. Hell, it does not even shed light on the reasons that led to the emergence of the civil war.

Though, Civil War’s ultimate focus is on the journalists, played by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. The thing that really stands out in the movie (according to critics) is how realistic the story appears. Garland dares to explore the horrors of a modern-day US-based civil war. Hard-hitting performances from the cast certainly provide the film with more depth.

Moreover, the film shows the states of Texas and California working together, which seems almost impossible in present times. The majority of California’s residents have been supporting the Democratic party for many years. On the other hand, we have Texas, one of the strongest footholds of the Republican party. Plus, Nick Offerman portrays the tyrannical US President in the film, who does not even care about following the US Constitution – a destroyer of democracy.

Kirsten Dunst Alex has confirmed that ‘Civil War’ does not promote blue or red ideologies.

“The movie isn’t partisan though, in any way. It’s not, it’s not about right or left,” Dunst said at this year’s SXSW. “That’s the total opposite message of this film. It’s really about humanity and what a civil war does to a country and the horrors of it. So it’s more of a warning than anything else. And I feel like it does shake you because it’s very intense, it feels very real to film. And I think that’s why it’s affecting everybody so much.”

Alex Garland’s Civil War is scheduled to arrive in theatres in the United States on April 12. Indian viewers can watch the film on April 19. Stay tuned for more updates.
