20th Century Fox dropped Alita: Battle Angel into the theatres worldwide in February 2019. The Robert Rodriguez directional received a lukewarm response from critics upon its release. Though, its reception among the audience was more positive. Yes, James Cameron’s screenplay suffered from some tonal inconsistencies. But overall, the cyberpunk action flick worked fine regarding visuals, performances, and action sequences.
It seems like Rodriguez is dead set to make a sequel out of his 2019 flick. The director has confirmed that Alita 2 is still on the cards. This is what he told GamesRadar+ about the sequel recently:
“Yeah, we have been talking about it [Alita 2], so we would love to make one. We haven’t set it for sure yet.”
The duo of Cameron and Jon Landau produced Alita: Battle Angel. Speaking about them, Rodriguez revealed, “They are slammed with all the Avatar stuff, but they’ve definitely been engaging [with a possible Alita sequel].”
The first Alita instalment earned over $400 million globally against a production budget of nearly $200 million. Given the film’s massive budget, its box office collection was considered unimpressive. However, Fox cleared the air by disclosing that the project needed to collect over $350 million to break even.
Like the original manga series fans, we also believe that Alita: Battle Angel deserves a sequel. The rumoured sequel is expected to use Avatar 2’s technology for visual effects. If this is true, the fans may get an exhilarating and visually thrilling experience from the second Alita project.
Additionally, the manga series treasures a compelling story arc for Alita. Her character is a blend of determination, strength, and vulnerability, making her character likeable and relatable. Also, the performances of Roza Salazar and Christoph Waltz could add more depth to the sequel. Rodriguez has already talked with the former about a possible sequel, and Waltz has shared his willingness to reprise his role of Dr Dyson Ido, Alita’s father’s figure, in future.
Overall, Alita’s journey of self-discovery is amazing. This is why the 2019 flick deserves a sequel.
