Grave of the Fireflies, a Studio Ghibli film, will be streamed on Netflix starting on September 16 in more than 190 countries (Japan excluded). Except for the United States and Japan, Netflix currently offers 22 Studio Ghibli films. Grave of the Fireflies is the newest addition to this collection.
The film is based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s Naoki Prize-winning short tale, it is set in Kobe during the conclusion of World War Two and portrays the horrors of the time as well as the tragic fate of war orphan siblings. One of Studio Ghibli’s co-founders, the late Isao Takahata, directed the film Grave of the Fireflies when it made its debut in 1988.
The movie received positive reviews from critics and has an impeccable 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also lists it as one of just four best anime films and just two perfect war films. Because of how exciting and terrifying it is, it’s also one of those films that everyone should see at least once.
It chronicles the survival battle of orphaned siblings Seita and Setsuko near the close of World War 2. They were forced to reside in a relative’s house after their home was destroyed because they had little or no other option. However, over time, they grew resentful of their siblings and decided to leave the house as soon as they discovered an abandoned bombed shelter. This film depicts the day-to-day struggles of a brother who works against all obstacles to get food for his younger sister.
