Filmmaker Subhrajit Mitra has announced his next project and it is going to be based on Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic story ‘Devi Choudhurani’. Subhrajit Mitra is known for directing films like ‘Abhijatrik’, ‘Mon Amour’, ‘Chorabali’. Abhijatrik, the sequel to Satyajit Ray’s Apu trilogy went on to win two National Awards. Subhrajit has put his hands on a much more ambitious project this time.
Srabanti Chatterjee will be playing the titular character of Devi Choudhruani or ‘Bandit Queen Of Bengal’ and Veteran actor Prasenjit Chatterjee will be playing the male lead opposite her. Both have shown excitement for being a part of a film that is so deeply woven to the emotions and history of Bengal. The filmmaker has confirmed that even though the basic plotline will be from Bankim’s novel ‘Devi Choudhurani’, it will be more focused on actual history and that is why he has been researching with archives of the East India Company, Asiatic Society and Victoria Memorial.
Devi Choudhurani, or ‘The Bandit Queen Of Bengal’ was the first female warrior from who rose up against the British. The story follows a simple village girl who is married to a rich Jemindar’s son but is not accepted into his family after some time. The dejected lady goes into a jungle and finds a huge treasure, along with the treasure he also finds a monk named Bhabani Pathak and his disciples who fight against the crimes of the ruler class. Devi, as named by Bhabani Pathak afterwards, is trained heavily in all martial arts and becomes a fierce opponent of the British and the tyrant Jemindars. Bankim’s novel is based on real stories and Bhabani Pathak was the person who led the Sannyasi and Fakir Rebellion in 1770 to 1777. Devi Choudhurani is not just a legend, she is an actual historical figure, and the film will discover the historical aspects to the story and issue a more reliable account.
