Since last year, there were some strong reports that suggested that Amazon may end up buying MX Player. Lately MX Player has been a dull platform, majorly because of its bad UI and even worse content selection. When they were highly successful in shows like Aashram and Bhaukaal then there was no point switching to soft porn with Mastram kinda shows.
But they did. They neither remained a mainstream respectable platform nor a secluded but profitable soft porn platform like Ullu. It hung in between and perhaps that is what proved to be the most lethal thing for them.
Regardless, the news is true. Amazon is indeed set to purchase MX Player. However, against the common belief, they would be purchasing only a part of the platform. They won’t go on buying MX Player as a whole.
If reports are to be believed then the valuation of the entire deal is merely $100 Million which is pretty less compared to the $500 Million valuation of MX Player back in 2019.
This step will help Amazon miniTV gain some traction, more than Amazon Prime Video. Lately, Amazon has been paying a lot of attention to miniTV. Let’s see if this really helps Amazon. Now that JioCinema and Disney India are set to join hands, the clustering in Indian OTT is more than visible.
