It seems that Amazon Prime is on a journey to redeem itself after intense backlash from netizens regarding the removal of Odia film ‘Khyanikaa: The Lost Idea’ only two days after its release last month. The film even got a virtual campaign #BringBackKhyanikaa after the streaming service stated that they provide films only under nine language categories in India.
Now, the streaming platform has released another Odia documentary ‘Kotpad Weaving: The Story of a Race Against Time’ on its website for Amazon Prime US, UK, Canada, Australia among other English-speaking regions. This documentary is the second Odia film to feature on Amazon Prime World Wide after renowned activist Tulasi Munda’s ‘Tulasi Apa’.
The documentary has been directed by ace filmmaker Biswanath Rath who said, “This Amazon Prime premiere is surely one of the biggest milestones in the journey of our acclaimed documentary. We are sure, this will mark a new chapter in the documentary film scene in Odisha. This premiere further strengthens our belief in Odisha’s rich tribal culture, tradition, and heritage which have got so many unique stories for the global audience. The film has also been shown to Film/Textile/Fashion/Anthropology students in many National/International Institutes as part of their academic curriculum.”
While Amazon Prime has yet to release the documentary in India it will be made available soon. The documentary is about the dying tribal tradition of Kotpad handloom that is unique to the Mrigan community in Kotpad and is lesser known globally.
‘Kotpad Weaving’ has won three awards including ‘Award of Excellence 2018’ at Metro Film & TV Awards, USA and eight official selections in various other International Film Festivals. It was aired on DD National on March 24th, 2018 as well.
