Amazon Prime Video is looking to raise its stakes in the Indian streaming entertainment market, in the most conventional way in business – by acquiring another well-entrenched, popular contemporary in the industry. As per business, startups and tech publication TechCrunch, Amazon Prime Video has initiated talks with Times Internet, owner of MX Player, to buy the video-on-demand streaming service. As of now, there’s no certainty that the deal with go through.
Interestingly, Amazon Prime Video is not the only streaming giant eyeing MX Player. As per sources in the know, the ZEE5 – SonyLIV combine is also interested in acquiring MX Player, to further consolidate their place in the cluttered streaming market in India.
The factor that makes MX Player an alluring proposition for Prime is its 300 million global users. MX Player works largely on the ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) model. It also has a premium paid subscription based video-on-demand (SVOD) arm, but its free model works best for Indian users. The streaming platform offers its users a huge library of movies and shows in their original languages, as well as dubbed in other Indian languages. Recently, MX Player has begun offering a huge number of foreign titles – most significantly Korean and Chinese, dubbed in Indian languages.
Prime Video is already one of the leading streamers in India. The Indian streaming space is one of the few markets where Prime Video leads global leader Netflix in number of subscribers.
