Analysis: As always, there is a plethora of licensed films that are released on Amazon Prime Video. Some of them are spectacular like ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ and some are as forgettable as ‘Custody’ or ‘Bakasuran’.
Amazon Prime Video has done one thing better than last month and that is bringing one original movie to the slate. But the movie ‘Tiku Weds Sheru’ is as distasteful as it could be. In the future, the platform needs to focus more on the writing of the content than bringing about new originals.
The original shows are less in number but quite successful. ‘Modern Love Chennai’ was a wonderful feel good romance and it gathered applause from audiences and critics. It was part of the announcement of three shows of ‘Modern Love’, of which ‘Modern Love Mumbai’ came earlier. The series tasted quite an impressive success. Apart from that, Tamanna Bhatia’s ‘Jee Karda’ was a hot topic for some time. Her boldness and the erotic nature of the comedy made it quite popular among audiences.
To sum it up, it has been truly a disappointing month for Amazon Prime Video. There were many movies that could have done a lot better if the promotion were done right. Ponniyin Selvan 2 was nowhere comparing the viewership to Ponniyin Selvan 1. The licensed films still did a good job but this void in the original film slate is huge.
The shows are doing quite well and the two originals ‘Jee Karda’ and ‘Modern Love Chennai’ have done a good job in terms of viewership.
Overall the performance of the platform can be rated a 4 out of 10.
