Analysis:
The number of web series released on Prime Video in May 2023 is not huge. The Indian originals ‘Dahaad’ went on to garner a huge number of views and it was promoted by the platform tirelessly. Good performances and compact storytelling helped the show taste a huge success. Another original show was ‘Modern Love Chennai’, it serves as another extension to the previous show named ‘Modern Love Mumbai’. This show too was promoted dedicatedly and it was quite popular with fans.
Viswa Kaylan Rath’s comedy special ‘Mood Kharab’ was quite a success too. The comedian’s fans were excited and the show got a huge number of views. Jimmy O. Yang’s English comedy special was a hit too.
But there is a complete absence of original movies on the platform and it looks like they hace completely given up on this section. Prime Video has been pretty inconsistent with original movies since ‘Maja Ma’ came out last year.
The list of Licensed Movies released on Prime Video in May 2023 is quite long. It includes Movies like ‘Bholaa’ and ‘Shakuntalam’. ‘Bholaa’ had a disappointing run in the theaters and its reception on OTT too was not at all good, despite great promotions. The Malayalam movie ‘Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum’ starring Fahadh Faasil was appreciated by critics and audiences and had gained a decent number of views. The Kannada movie ‘Raghavendra stores’ too was released this month on OTT. The Telugu mythological drama ‘Shakuntalam’ starring Samantha could not gain much views after its premiere on Prime Video. Among other licensed films are ‘Kapala’ and ‘Enthada Saji’. Though it has some average names, the overall success of the licensed films on Prime is pretty good. So it is good to say the Amazon Prime Video’s May releases were just ‘fine’ but it could have been way better if the platform focused on original films and more shows like Dahaad. The platform deserves not more that 5 out of 10 for May, 2023.
