A couple of days ago, the highly anticipated trailer for the upcoming Suriya starrer, ‘Jai Bhim‘, was released on the official YouTube page of Amazon Prime Video… And it was electrifying. The trailer was made available in Tamil and Telugu and both videos have gone on to amass a lot of views (at least 3 lakh views per video). And now, barely a couple of hours ago, the Hindi version of the trailer was released on the same YouTube channel – check it out at the end of this article to view it.
While Suriya has only been a part of one direct-to-OTT release so far, which is ‘Soorarai Pottru’ – the film was probably India’s best film of the year (of 2020). The movie was released on Amazon Prime Video in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi and all versions got a very good amount of views on the streaming platform. The streaming platform seems to have sensed that this movie will probably do just as well and is planning to release in all of the aforementioned languages as well.
Set in 1995, follow Suriya as Advocate Chandru, who tries to find justice for an Irular tribe couple, Senggeni and Rajakannu. Based on true events that happened in Tamil Nadu back in 1993, this film attempts to show the injustice faced by many tribal people who didn’t have a recorded source of income or housing – which continues to this day in various parts of the country.
The aforementioned couple, Sengenni and Rajakannu, are taken by police, with the latter being accused of crimes they haven’t been a part of. The cops use their illiteracy and ignorance of the law against them and they attempt to coerce a verbal confession out of Rajakannu by threatening, beating and torturing him. Sengenni somehow manages to get Advocate Chandru on her side, who discovers that this is not the first time that an incident like this has occurred. Chandra takes up this case as the implications of the injustice that occurred in the lower rungs of society would have a detrimental effect on society as a whole.
Suriya‘s upcoming legal drama, ‘Jai Bhim‘, will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on November 2nd 2021.
