Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television have just wrapped production on their joint venture, the epic fantasy series ‘The Wheel Of Time‘. The series that will stream on Amazon Prime Video doesn’t have a launch date yet, but is slated to premiere on the platform some time later this year. Now comes news that Amazon has renewed the series for a new season even before the premiere of the maiden season of ‘The Wheel Of Time’.
The Wheel Of Time is a fantasy series, adapted from Robert Jordan’s book series of the same name. It centres on a powerful, mystical order of female channelers (who can use the power of magic), called the Aes Sedai. Following an attack by the forces of the ‘Dark One’, Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), an Aes Sedai, embarks on a perilous journey with five young people of the village of Two Rivers. She believes that one person among the five is a reincarnation of an ancient powerful channeler Dragon, who is prophesied to either save or destroy humanity.
The story of The Wheel Of Time is vast and sprawling, with an impressive number of characters included in the fourteen novels that make up the series. The series picks up themes from Hinduism (reincarnation), Islamism (Shaitan or the Devil), Buddhism (cyclical nature of time) and Christianity. Besides Rosamund Pike, the series stars Álvaro Morte (Money Heist), Daniel Henney (Criminal Minds, Big Hero 6), Madeleine Madden (Dora And The Lost City Of Gold, along with Joshua Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, Zoe Robins, Barney Harris, Michael McElhatton, Hammed Animashaun, Alexandrew Willaume, Johann Myers, among others.
The Wheel of Time is written by Rafe Judkins (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Chuck), who is also the showrunner and executive producer of the series. Uta Briesewitz will direct the first two episodes of The Wheel Of Time, Season 2, while Rosamund Pike will produce.
The renewal for Season 2 is testament to the belief and confidence that Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television have in The Wheel of Time as a viable property.
