The trailer for Coolie No. 1 just dropped and every one went down a nostalgia trip as it brought back memories of the Govinda and Karishma starrer. The latest edition of Coolie No. 1 stars Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan in the lead roles, it seems the presence of the female lead is very negligible. Though Sara Ali Khan has mentioned in her earlier interviews that she doesn’t mind about her screen timings, all she cares about is a good script. But why is it the same with everyone else?
In the comedy movies of recent few years we all have seen how women are, though given a screen time in some, aren’t given much of a logical presence. Their presence is all about complimenting the male leads of the movie. They have reduced to more of an “arm candy” in the recent comedy movies.
This specially effects a generations that has watched the Bollywood divas like Juhi Chawla, Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Preity Zinta, Sridevi, Hema Malini and so many more do equally good and gave a competition to their male counterparts in the comedy genre. Those earlier ones, even though centered around a male lead, the female lead equally pulled it off.
But now the scene has changed. I can’t get a proper name for female leads when it comes to the present era and generation of Bollywood. Yes, they have all tried their luck, but most ended up being the beautiful, trophy girlfriend or wife that the hero so vehemently persuaded.
Bollywood can be seen doing great with the female leads when it comes to action, horror or any other genre but why is comedy lacking behind? Also, let’s not even talk about the trash comedies that are being produced like Grand Masti and such. The amount of adult jokes sugar-coated as comedy is no more funny, it has become another level of cringe. Also, adult jokes and comedy are not the only thing in the world that can be paired together. The writers should by now know this.
This is just an account of a fan that loved the yesteryear comedy queens and still has hopes that someday Bollywood will be able to pull it back.
