The 2024 edition of the Academy Awards, more popularly known as the Oscars, will be held on 10th March 2024 in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Multiple countries are geared up for their official Oscar entries for this category and the list includes France as well.
But a few months back, cinephiles across the globe were flabbergasted when France ignored the widely acclaimed courtroom drama ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ in favour of the culinary drama ‘The Taste of Things’ to represent the country in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ Oscar category. Although the former was one of the five films which were shortlisted by France’s Oscars committee for the category.
We don’t have anything against France’s official Oscar entry ‘The Taste of Things’, but this surprising decision by France’s Oscar committee is getting more obvious by the day. Earlier today, ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ bagged two important awards at the 2024 edition of the prestigious Golden Globes Award ceremony. The snubbed French film has won the ‘Non-English Language Best Picture’ and the ‘Best Screenplay’ awards at the Golden Globes 2024. Earlier, the film had also won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and was named as the ‘Best International Film’ by the National Board of Review.
Movie buffs across France must be bewildered and disappointed even more now, because, especially after the recent Golden Globe win for ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, the belief is reinstated that the country might have lost a really good chance to win the coveted ‘Best International Feature Film’ trophy at Oscars 2024.
And this makes us think whether the Academy should slightly bend its rules with respect to different countries sending just one film for the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category. The rules might be altered to accommodate two or three films instead of one in this category. We mean to say that different countries could be given an option to send two or three films for the category and out of these, the Oscar jury could select one of them to finally compete at the Oscars. Food for thought!
