It’s an ‘Annaatthe‘ Vs ‘Enemy’ Diwali this year and the clash is picking up more steam by the day! After the wise postponing of Silambarasan’s ‘Maanaadu’ to November 25th, Rajinikanth’s ‘Annaatthe’ and the Arya-Vishal starrer ‘Enemy’ are fighting it out for screens in cinema halls. There was some buzz on the ground that ‘Enemy’ would get pushed to a later date or go in for an OTT release, but the makers announced that the film is still very much on for a theatrical release on November 4th for Diwali. As per the latest developments, it looks like ‘Enemy’ has been severely impacted by ‘Annaatthe’. Read on to know more.
According to reports, the situation as of earlier today was that ‘Annaatthe’ was hogging the screen count with a whopping 900 screens out of the 1100 odd available screens. This has apparently left ‘Enemy’ with less than 100 screens (with Hollywood film ‘Eternals getting about 100 screens) and the makers have requested the Producers Council to help them get at least 250 screens this Diwali for their film. In a Whatsapp voice note that is doing the rounds, Vinod Kumar, the producer of ‘Enemy’, has said that some of the theatre owners, especially multiplexes, are under pressure to screen the other big release.
Expressing his disappointed with the monopoly in the Tamil film industry, the producer says, “Despite getting a good offer from Hotstar, I’m releasing my film in theaters. It’s impossible to release a superstar film on 900 screens. All I need is 250 screens, hope my association helps me. There shouldn’t be any monopoly here. Even if a big film gets all screens across the state, it wouldn’t run to packed houses and might end up becoming a disaster. So when another film gets decent screens, both films would benefit and will make the industry look healthy. The monopoly and biases will not work in favour of anyone and I will certainly fight this irrespective of names that are involved,” he concluded.
The issue is trending on social media with netizens suggesting that the film should release a day prior to ‘Annaatthe’ in order to seal the deal with theatre associations, who will be left with no choice but to screen ‘Enemy’. It remains to be seen if the makers pay heed to this advice. Regardless, this Diwali will be an action-packed festive season, with the out-and-out action thriller ‘Enemy’ and the action drama ‘Annaatthe’ that is said to be an emotional sibling saga.
