The newest trailer of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom unveils a lot about the upcoming sequel. But most importantly, it teases that two dark theories about the film may become true. DCEU will end after the upcoming Jason Momoa starrer. So, Warner Bros may have made some big changes in the film’s storyline, making it grimmer and more serious than the first one (2018).
It does not matter how great the deeds of superheroes appear; it is the tragedies that make them truly great and force them to face the consequences of their actions. And it seems like Arthur Curry will face the consequences of his past actions in the upcoming sequel.
At the beginning of the first film, we see Arthur going one-on-one with David Kane (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) in a submarine. During their fight, David’s father, Jesse Kane, tried to distract Arthur to help his son. However, his plan backfired, and Arthur ended up seriously injuring Jesse. But this did not stop Jesse, who later blew a hole into the submarine. As the water started flooding the submarine, Arthur decided to leave the injured Jesse and his son, David, behind, as he believed that they deserved to die. This scenario led to Jesse’s demise, an event that drove David mad and forced him to become the Black Manta.
In the latest trailer, Black Manta vows “to kill Aquaman and destroy everything he holds dear”. Soon, the clip teases the death of Arthur’s father. It even showed Black Manta attempting to kill Arthur’s newborn son. These scenarios have made many viewers believe that Black Manta would fulfil his twisted and dark promises in the sequel.
Killing off Arthur’s father, Tom Curry (Temuera Morrison), makes sense as this case adds more seriousness to the film’s storyline and ultimately raises the stakes way higher than the first film. As for Aquaman’s baby boy, the odds of his death are low but not completely zero. Believe it or not, Black Manta has actually killed Arthur’s son in the comics.
The death of Aquaman’s son occurred in the classic storyline “Death of a Prince”, a part of David Michelinie and Jim Aparo’s Adventure Comics (#452). In this comic book storyline, Black Manta takes an underwater place hostage as he wants to establish his kingdom there. Manta and his men overpower Arthur and force him to fight with his sidekick, Aqualad, to death. Additionally, he cages Arthur’s baby boy in a bubble with low air presence. While fighting with Aqualad, Aquaman realises that his buddy, Topo, is near him. Aquaman commands Topo to attack Manta. This distracts the supervillain and gives Arthur a chance to break the bubble with his trident. Unfortunately, he was too late. Arthur’s baby dies due to suffocation.
The storyline mentioned above is way darker than all the previous storylines that have been shown in the past DCEU projects. Considering the tone of all of Aquaman 2’s promotional clips, which look fun and exciting, we may not see his baby’s death in the film. However, Warner Bros can turn things around here, as ‘The Lost Kingdom’ will serve as the final feature entry to the DCEU. Killing Arthur’s baby will be something that the franchise’s fans will remember forever. Let’s see what happens in the sequel, which will arrive in theatres worldwide on December 22. Stay tuned for more updates.
