The newly created entertainment conglomerate Warner Bros. Discovery has postponed the theatrical releases for several of its films and the list also includes the eagerly anticipated sequels to superhero flicks ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Shazam’ namely ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ and ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’.
‘Aquaman 2’, which was earlier scheduled to release on 17th March 2023, will now release on 25th December 2023. On the other hand, ‘Shazam 2’ has been delayed from 21st December 2022 to its new release date of 17th March 2023, the date now vacated by ‘Aquaman’ sequel.
‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ starring Jason Momoa in the titular role has been helmed by the first film’s director James Wan (of ‘Saw’ & ‘The Conjuring’ fame). Similarly, ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ featuring Zachary Levy has been directed by David F. Sandberg, the parent film’s helmer. After their release, ‘Aquaman’ had grossed over a whopping $1.1 billion while ‘Shazam!’ had grossed $366 million at the box office globally.
Following the aforementioned release date shuffles, ‘Shazam 2’ will now not clash with James Cameron’s highly anticipated potential blockbuster sci-fi epic film ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’.
Moreover, Calmatic’s comedy film ‘House Party’ and the supernatural horror movie ‘Evil Dead Rise’ have received theatrical release dates of 9th December 2022 and 21st April 2023, respectively. Earlier, both these films were supposed to release directly on the HBO Max streaming platform.
Besides, another horror film ‘The Nun 2’, which is set in the Conjuring universe, will release in theatres on 8th September 2023. And the supernatural horror flick ‘Salem’s Lot’, based on Stephen King’s book of the same name, has been postponed from its April 2023 release to a yet to be announced new theatrical release date.
