Aquaman is indeed the most successful franchise in the entire DC universe, and five years after the first installment, the second one is just around the corner. This time, it might face a tempest during its Christmas run.
Hollywood’s major tracking service anticipates the DC superhero sequel “The Lost Kingdom” to open with $40 million over the Dec. 22-25 holiday weekend, according to National Research Group data. Warner Bros. projects a more optimistic $50 million.
However, it’s expected to fall short of the first Aquaman’s 2018 debut of $75.8 million over the four-day weekend, reaching $97.8 million with special previews included.
“The Lost Kingdom,” directed by James Wan and starring Jason Momoa, confronts challenges with delays, test screening issues, and multiple reshoots. Despite sluggish presales and tracking concerns, Warner Bros. aims for a strong holiday box office.
Meanwhile, Universal’s animated film “Migration” anticipates a modest $13 million opening, reflecting animation’s struggle post-pandemic as families opt for home viewing.
A bright spot is Warner Bros.’ “The Color Purple,” a musical adaptation with a projected $7 million opening on Christmas Day, potentially surpassing $9 million. The film features Danielle Brooks and Fantasia Barrino, bringing optimism amid industry challenges.
Christmas will definitely have a good enough impact on the film, but the falling kingdom of DC will not be saved by Aquaman. The new dawn does look full of potential, but again, how bright the day is, only time will tell.
The dip in the stats will also be caused by WB itself as they will be releasing 3 films in 10 days that include Aquaman, Wonka, and The Color Purple. That is not just a proper suicide mission but also running three films with good potential.
