The so-called boom of the OTT market has led to several players and filmmakers taking the plunge with unique and experimental content which has been nothing less than a treat to all the audience who have gotten a chance to view this spectacle.
The most recent example of Netflix pushing the envelope can be seen in Ak vs Ak where the audience have loved this unique meta cinema film which looks to blur the difference between what is fiction and what is reality. OTT platforms have also tried their bit with a few Indian dark comedies like Hasmukh and Afsos but the audience have flocked towards it like some of the other titles that have been released.
Dark comedy isn’t for everybody and you need a filtered or nuanced audience to understand the subtext or the layers of the character in each scene to fully appreciate this genre. While the audience that are migrating to OTT platforms are becoming increasingly open to new genres and themes.
Even the OTT platforms are slowly realizing that even though their audiences appreciate homegrown stories they are still looking for something new when it comes to the execution which is why the Dark Comedy may get a fair share of its opportunity as one can witness that there have only been about a handful of shows which could broadly fit into that category.
Indians have tried their hands at Dark Comedy since a long time but such risks were usually far and few apart but the OTT platforms ae here to stay and we may just see more and more Dark comedies become an important part in the content stratergy of such digital platforms.
