We have all seen that the Indian audience is shifting towards OTT platforms swiftly, and it is becoming an increasingly saturated market. Many players in the industry sense that there is a great opportunity here and many biggies have also taken the OTT route recently. With many of the upcoming platforms not having the budget or the resources, surviving in this cutthroat space can be a tough task.
One of the tricks that many such platforms are increasingly using is an explicit show of adult content, whether it is a show of extreme vulgarism or violence. While such stuff may be necessary to determine the context and give us a better understanding of the character, there seems to be a fine line between what counts as bold and what becomes vulgar or unnecessarily brutal. I think we all know at least a few titles on every OTT platform that has truckloads of such content.
The Indian audience had started to grow weary of the many restrictions that are usually imposed by the censor board and the fact that OTT platforms were willing to take away all of that came as a boon as we got to see the raw and untapped potential of so many filmmakers and actors.
While it has its good effects, many new platforms are using sleazy shows in the garb of no restrictions and using it as a cheap trick to gain more eyeballs. I wouldn’t want to take any names, but the youth are more prone to consuming the content on these platforms, and if more and more of the younger generation are exposed to this without any regulation it can have a grave effect on them.
