Fantasy is one of the most entertaining genres there ever is. Not only the scale, the acting and the visual effects lure public attention towards them but also the fact that fantasy disbands reality and gives the audience the experience of watching something they would otherwise never be a part of. One of the major reasons behind the cult fandoms of Harry Potter franchise, Lord of The Rings series or the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the fantasy world building that they’ve achieved. It seems like the streaming platforms are now gearing up for a war of fantasy shows. Every streaming giant is pumping in millions to create their own fantasy universe and their own fandoms. Let’s take a look at some of the most hyped ones.
Netflix already has an established show fantasy epic ‘The Witcher’ with two seasons currently streaming and the third underway. The platform also has ‘Shadow&Bone’, with it’s second season soon to premiere. Netflix also has fantasy horror drama ‘The Sandman’ in it’s meaty line-up.
Amazon Prime Video has ‘The Wheel of Time’ up its sleeves. The first season of the series premiered in 2021 and sophomore season is currently underway. Besides, Prime Video also has the mammoth series ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ up and coming. One can only expect the show to be one of the best outings ever for the streaming platform.
HBO Max is also not far behind in this neck-to-neck competition in fantasy genre. Prequel to Game of Thrones, ‘House of Dragon’ will premiere on the platform due August. A Jon Snow spin-off show is also in the pipeline apart from few other GOT themed shows.
Sci-Fi fantasy is clearly a genre where Disney+ is winning, all credits to the Marvel shows they have their side. But beyond the offerings from Marvel Cinematic Universe if there’s a fantasy show from Disney+ that would have the world tuning in, it’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’.
While most of these shows are based on written works and comics, it is amusing to see the mere number of fantasy shows from streaming platforms that would find its way to audience in no time. While this could be termed as a fantasy war between streaming platforms, the actual beneficiaries are fantasy genre lovers. And we are definitely not complaining!
