Kottukkaali (English title: The Adament Girl) is a Tamil masterpiece that released a week ago and is in news for the marvellous content it provides. Critics hail it as the ‘Best Movie of the Year’ and the movie is in the race for the Oscars. When the whole country is filled with nostalgia of the old unsuccessful classics being re-released in the theatres and people enjoying them, we are forgetting this masterpiece that was launched just a year ago. Kottukkaali, despite having been called as the best movie of the year, is behind the worst of the movies in terms of collection.
The movie was launched on 23rd August. At the time, it had quite a competition in the Tamil industry with already two good movies i.e., Thangalaan and Demonte Colony 2 ongoing. Whereas, it had a direct competition releasing on the day in the name of Vaazhai. But critics had rated Kottukkaali more than Vaazhai, this made the creators confident of it. Also, the film had been selected in the Forum section at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival and was screened on 16 February 2024. It had also won several prestigious awards prior to its release. But the reception of the movie in India was worse than what the makers had imagined.
The film made an opening day collection of just 0.42 crores. The net income the movie made in its first week was 1.32 crores. The fifth day was the worst for the movie with a meagre income of 0.06 crores. The film, despite being the best, could not even stand on the position of 200th highest grossing film of the year. This shows the hypocrisy of the Indian audience, who are supporting the old classics which could not shine in the box office, but pushing the current good movies into the same pit.
The audience failing such a good movie discourages the makers from producing such content. After all, a producer makes a movie in order to generate revenue. Producers will stop making good movies if we stop watching them. Hence, though re-releasing old movies and supporting them is a good thing to do, the real support one can give is by supporting the movies when they are released, so the makers never fret in creating such contents.
