The spectacle of ‘Argylle’ focuses on an action-packed build-up, but unfortunately, it struggles to translate this into box office glory. Directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn, with a screenplay by Jason Fuchs, the spy action comedy has garnered attention for its stellar cast and the question of ‘budget meets box office.’
Featuring iconic names like Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Dua Lipa, John Cena, among others, the storyline revolves around Elly, a reclusive author whose fictional narratives unexpectedly come to life.
Despite the soaring anticipation for its release, ‘Argylle’ received generally negative reviews from both critics and audiences. Criticisms include the film’s runtime, unnecessary plot twists, and the use of CGI in action sequences, turning anticipated nail-biting moments into a parody.
The film, released theatrically on February 1 in the UK and February 2 in the USA through Universal Pictures and Apple Original Films, managed to collect $34.5 million so far at the box office. However, with a budget of $200 million, the box office collection falls too short of the break-even point.
While the digital debut on Apple TV+ is confirmed, the release date is yet to be announced. Reports suggest that ‘Argylle’ will be available on Video On Demand (VOD) platforms for purchase/rental before streaming on Apple TV+ for its subscribers, which is tentatively around the second week of March.
‘Argylle’ is worth a shot for a home viewing experience, so you don’t miss out on whimsical humor and you guessed it, Henry Cavill!
