See, Apple TV is making an attempt to get a hold of the market, as the market states they need to spend some big checks on some big projects. And Argylle is one of those big projects where the big and talented cast couldn’t save the film.
Talking about the cast, just Henry Cavill and Bryan Cranston can save any film with a good script and execution, but Argylle missed all these. Besides Cavill and Cranston, there were some of the biggest names such as John Cena, Dua Lipa, and Samuel L. Jackson who became a part of the sinking ship.
The theatrical run of the film was already pretty questionable, grossing $96.2M with a budget of $200M; the stats are definitely laughable. Now, recently, no Apple Original Film has been a box office success, especially the big ones. But one thing that can be said about them, down the line, these films will definitely be a major asset for the platform to grow.
But Argylle might fall flat like no other project.
Firstly, its theatrical run was not only hated by the fans, but the critics rejected it as well. Now, it wasn’t all bad as some of the action sequences were actually praiseworthy, and Bryce Dallas Howard was at the receiving end of some positive reviews; this is where the positives end. Things go south from here.
The plot was sheer crap, the VFX were equally bad if not weaker and more irritating. Even the film had zero character development, which eventually resulted in a forgettable theatrical experience, but the misfortune doesn’t end here.
See, no hate to Apple TV, but their low subscriber count will contribute massively to the bad theatrical experience of the film. If it were something by Netflix or Prime Video, there were actually chances that a good number of people would have watched it. But statistically, Apple TV has less than 10% subscribers compared to Netflix, and some of the major Apple TV shows are the most pirated ones. So, chances are low that the views will justify the cost behind the show.
Even Apple TV isn’t really putting much effort into the OTT release date; they are also just making a couple of tweets, and the negligence is one of the major reasons behind the failure of the OTT run. Though it was completely opposite when it comes to the theatrical run, the studio put a lot of effort into advertisements, but it didn’t really work out.
Even the fans aren’t much interested in streaming Argylle; Twitter is witnessing a drought when it comes to the fan engagement of the film.
