The much-awaited sequel to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito’s 1988 buddy comedy film ‘Twins’ finally seems to be kicking off after 33 years of the original film’s release. Although there were talks about the sequel titled ‘Triplets’ since 2012 when Universal had announced the duo’s comeback and Eddie Murphy’s addition to the cast.
However, as per a recent report (via Deadline), ‘30 Rock’ actor Tracy Morgan would now essay the role of the third brother (instead of Eddie Murphy) in the sequel. The original film’s director Ivan Reitman is coming back to direct the sequel. Because the window for making the sequel was ostensibly crossed, the makers are now trying to get it financed through the Toronto film market.
The original film ‘Twins’ revolved around the titular twin brothers (played by Schwarzenegger and DeVito) who were born out of a secret experiment with diametrically opposite personalities, and they were separated at birth. When the physically perfect brother learns of his twin’s existence, he travels to Los Angeles to meet him, with unanticipated consequences. Made on a budget of $18 million, the film went on to gross more than $216 million at the box office.
Regarding the premise of the sequel ‘Triplets’, director Ivan Reitman had said that “Secretly, there was a third baby born, a Black baby, who hasn’t been in touch with his siblings. They don’t know each other and very early in the movie they meet and it’s how they achieve a bond together after all these years. It’s really a film about family and, no matter how different we all are, we have to learn to get along. These guys have great chemistry together, and you can see that in the reel, and how much energy they bring out in each other.”
The filming of ‘Triplets’ is expected to commence in January in Boston. With actor and stand-up comedian Tracy Morgan added to the mix, it would be really interesting to see his chemistry with his on-screen brothers Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito in the ‘Twins’ sequel ‘Triplets’.
