‘Sarpatta Parambarai’ lead actor Arya’s latest film – the sci-fi action thriller ‘Captain’, will release in Indian theatres today. ‘Captain’ has been helmed by Shakti Soundar Rajan, who is known for his unique filmmaking approach. So, naturally the curiosity and expectations for the movie were reasonably high. A few days back, when Captain’s trailer was unveiled, we had indicated our apprehension about how underwhelming the trailer was and the special effects/VFX were also average.
And now, it seems that our fears about ‘Captain’ are turning out to be true. Because, as per some of the early talks from US premieres and the latest buzz, the movie has sadly turned out to be a damp squib. The film’s VFX are being called sub-standard and the screenplay/story predictable. There is nothing special about Arya’s performance but it’s not bad either. However, the film’s concept, production values and a brave attempt are being talked about as some of its positives.
From Captain’s early feedback, it looks like the negatives have outweighed the positives. Moreover, with adeptly executed and top-notch same-genre international films like ‘Prey’ being made, comparisons might be inevitable to the point of being even ruthless.
A similar thing happened earlier this year when John Abraham’s ‘Attack’ came out. With a plot reminiscent of Roland Emmerich’s ‘Universal Soldier’ and ‘Robocop’ films, ‘Attack’ failed to unanimously impress the critics and audiences alike and eventually performed poorly at the box office.
Whether Arya’s ‘Captain’ would meet the same fate as John Abraham’s ‘Attack’ remains to be seen. Verdict from Indian moviegoers will be out today, and it would be interesting to see whether they accept the film despite its apparent flaws. After completing its theatrical run, ‘Captain’ would start streaming on the Zee5 OTT platform. Stay tuned to Binged for the latest updates on ‘Captain’ OTT release details.
