In a few days, Netflix India is releasing their upcoming feel-good web series, ‘Aryan & Meera‘. The trailer for this “Indian couples challenging the social norms-series” (a mouthful, we know) was released yesterday on Netflix India’s official YouTube Channel and it was extremely relatable. However, something caught our eye – this web series was called a Netflix India YouTube series. This means the Netflix show will actually be streaming on the Netflix India YouTube channel, and not on the OTT platform itself. Which is huge.
And, it makes sense. Although Netflix is a beloved streaming platform around the globe (India included), it has a low subscription rate in India when compared to the rest of the world. While Netflix is one of the biggest streaming companies on the planet and has put in a lot of money for creating original Indian content, it would be moot without enough new Indian subscribers to sustain this crazy amount of spending.
So one way to get people interested in their streaming platform is by making fresh content available for Indians to have access to. By releasing the web series on YouTube, the user can access the content for free, while Netflix can make money off of ad revenues as well as viewer and subscriber count. But this business model won’t work on all types of Indian content in the long run.
But for now, this is a brilliant way to allow Indians access to quality Netflix content. Netflix had done similar thing years ago, when they allowed a separate, cheaper Netflix mobile package in India only, which made the streaming platform much more attractive. Netflix has proved that they know how to market their product in India we’ll and if they continue their efforts, they can easily gain a significant amount of subscribers by 2022.
Check out Aryan & Meera, the Netflix India YouTube series on the official YouTube account of Netflix India as it premiers on 25th August 2021. Check out the trailer below:
