There’s spectacular news in store for fans of the smash-hit video game franchise, Assassin’s Creed. In one of its most interesting collaborations yet, Netflix has tied up with Ubisoft, owners of Assassin’s Creed, to create a live-action series based on the best-selling video game franchise. In addition to the live-action series, Netflix will also develop several animated series and anime, based on Assassin’s Creed.
Work has already begun on the first Assassin’s Creed series at Netflix. It will be a high-octane live-action adaptation of the video games. A press release from Netflix states that the first series will be an “epic, genre-bending live-action adaptation”. The series will be executive produced by Ubisoft Film & Television’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik.
The news from the Netflix stables took the media and entertainment world by surprise. There was no inkling that a Netflix – Ubisoft collaboration was on the anvil at present. There had earlier been talks of an animated Assassin’s Creed show at Netflix, to be created by Adi Shankar, creator of Netflix’s Castlevania. Yet, today’s news is a bolt out of the blue.

In a statement to the media, Jason Altman, Head of Ubisoft Film & Television said, “For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise. We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”
Added Peter Friedlander, VP, Original Series, Netflix, “We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for. From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”
Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed adaptation is the latest in a series of announcements of live action adaptations of popular video games franchises by top streaming platforms. Netflix hasn’t announced the cast and crew for its Assassin’s Creed live action series yet. There’s also no information on the tentative release date for the series.
Assassin’s Creed is one of the most popular video games in the world. Previously, a 2016 feature film based on the games, directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender, had proved to be unsuccessful at the box office. Let’s see whether Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed live action series is a hit or a flop.
