Avatar 3 is scheduled to come out in December 2025, and it will undoubtedly be the most important entry in James Cameron’s epic sci-fi franchise.
Commencing its journey all the way back in 2009 with the first Avatar film, Cameron’s franchise received a sophomore entry, The Way of Water, in December last year. Both flicks have grossed over $2 billion at the global box office and are nothing short of visual masterpieces. The director took such a long gap to make the sequel as he did not have the necessary CGI and motion capture technologies to implement his vision for the film flawlessly. But now, he possesses those revolutionary filmmaking technologies, shortening the gap between his upcoming Avatar projects.
Avatar 3 has a lot to deal with before arriving in theatres. For instance, the threequel may receive less hype than its predecessor, given that the latter entry came out after 13 years. A gap this long was enough to generate immense hype among James Cameron’s fans. It was treated like a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity. However, Avatar 3 may not receive this kind of treatment from fans. In addition, The Way of Water’s critical reception was not as great as the first film. This scenario may also make things difficult for the third part.
All the remaining Avatar films will now come out more like a conventional Hollywood film franchise. It means they are expected to endure more scrutiny from viewers and critics. This may adversely impact Avatar 3’s collections and profits. The second part needed to earn at least $1.8-2 billion globally to emerge as a box office success, and thankfully it minted over $2.3 billion.
Yes, Avatar 3 has a lot of hype behind it and may lead the global box office of the year 2025. But the real question is this: Will it be more profitable than its predecessors? Only time will tell us.
Avatar 3’s rumored title is ‘The Seed Bearer.’ It will introduce the fire-based tribe, The Ash People, and focus on Na’vi’s efforts to rebuild the Tree of Souls. It will come out in theatres globally on December 19, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates.
