James Cameron’s sequel to the visually stunning 2009 sci-fi film ‘Avatar’ titled ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is one of the most eagerly anticipated movies in the world. And after several delays, it’s finally set for a grand theatrical release on 16th December 2022. But with great expectations, comes massive pressures as well. Pressure about whether ‘Avatar 2’ will be able to live-up to the hype, critically and commercially? The answer has become quite obvious with the recent theatrical re-release of the parent film ‘Avatar’.
After 13 years since the release of the original ‘Avatar’ movie, a remastered version of it was released again in theatres. The re-release grossed around $10 million at the US box-office supplemented by another $20.5 million in non-US regions, thereby taking the combined global box-office weekend tally to a whopping $30.5 million.
With Avatar’s re-release box-office figures, you can imagine the craze for the cult film and the massive hype for ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ amongst cinephiles worldwide. Having said that, James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ sequel is one of the most expensive movies ever made in the history of cinema. For some perspective, a new theatrical release ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ has earned $30 million during the same period.
But for those of you, who are rather still doubting whether ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ would be able to easily recover its costs or not, you shouldn’t worry because even the first film was made on a huge budget, but it eventually grossed over $2.8 billion at the box-office worldwide. Moreover, the warm acceptance for ‘Avatar’ re-release has further reinforced audiences’ faith in James Cameron’s dream project.
For ‘Avatar 2’, the parent film’s lead cast members including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver are returning for the sequel. While the new additions boast of some big names like Kate Winslet and Vin Diesel, amongst others.
‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is set in the year 2167 and revolves around former human Jake Sully and his mate Neytiri who are now living together in Pandora and their efforts to keep their family safe. After ‘Avatar 2’, three more Avatar sequels are in the works and slated to release with two-year gaps in December 2024, December 2026, and December 2028 respectively.
