Marvel Studios has decided to push back the release of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The former ambitious project will now arrive in theatres on December 18, 2026, while Secret Wars has secured December 17, 2027, as its theatrical premiere. Doomsday was initially slated for a May 1, 2026, release.
Fans have pointed out that Avengers: Doomsday will clash with Dune: Messiah (also referred to as Dune 3), which is also set to hit theatres globally on December 18, 2026. The upcoming Timothée Chalamet and Florence Pugh starrer will be the third entry in Denis Villeneuve’s prominent Dune franchise.
This highly anticipated clash has inspired fans to dub it “Dunesday,” in reference to “Barbenheimer” in July 2023, when Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie were released on the same day.
The so-called “Dunesday” event could turn out to be an even bigger phenomenon than Barbenheimer, provided neither Marvel Studios nor Warner Bros. decides to shift their respective release dates.
Marvel and Disney’s decision to delay Doomsday and Secret Wars makes sense, as they aim to emphasise “quality over quantity” in upcoming MCU projects. This strategy would also give the production teams more time to enhance the CGI work in both mega-blockbuster films.
Both Doomsday and Secret Wars are crucial projects for Marvel and Disney. The studios know they cannot afford to mishandle these Avengers films, especially after losing a significant portion of their fan base in the post-Endgame era due to an oversaturation of poorly received titles, both theatrically and on Disney+.
The delays for Doomsday and Secret Wars are largely due to the need for longer production timelines. Given the massive scale and extensive casts of both films, particularly Doomsday, which reportedly features a larger ensemble than Infinity War, the initial schedules were unrealistic. For context, Avengers: Infinity War had about 16 months for production, while Endgame took nearly two years.
With Avengers: Doomsday originally set to begin filming in late April 2025, the timeline would have allowed just over a year to complete both filming and post-production. Marvel Studios has now added seven extra months to Doomsday’s schedule, and an additional year to Secret Wars, ensuring both projects have the necessary time for high-quality production.
Another potential reason for Disney and Marvel’s scheduling shift could be The Mandalorian & Grogu, the first major Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. The upcoming Jon Favreau project is set to premiere in theatres on May 22, 2026. Releasing Doomsday and The Mandalorian & Grogu in the same month could have cannibalized the box office performance of both these high-profile titles.
In 2023, the simultaneous release of Barbie and Oppenheimer—two vastly different films—generated immense cultural buzz. Audiences embraced the idea of a double feature, and both films significantly outperformed expectations. Dune 3 and Avengers: Doomsday also represent distinct genres—epic sci-fi and superhero blockbuster—which could encourage a similar “counter-programming” success.
A direct clash between these two highly anticipated films will no doubt generate massive media coverage and public conversation. This heightened attention could attract viewers who might not have otherwise been interested in Dune 3 on its own.
Additionally, Florence Pugh is reportedly appearing in both Avengers: Doomsday (as Yelena Belova) and Dune: Messiah (as Princess Irulan). This crossover appeal could spark fan interest in both films and provide another compelling reason to experience “Dunesday.” Stay tuned for more updates.
