The Independence Day market is highly competitive, with several industries facing big clashes. Stree 2 is like Usain Bolt in the race, while the rest are filled with contenders in their 40s. But the competition extends into regional markets as well, and Bengal is no exception.
It was Padatik vs. Babli, a battle of romance versus biopic, and the audience preferred Babli over Padatik. There’s no need to be surprised, as the warmth of romance always appeals to the masses.
The issue isn’t always about depth and quality; releasing the right film at the right time is crucial. While audiences appreciate Padatik, it’s not a film you typically watch with your family.
Sometimes silly things work, and sometimes serious ones do. With nearly 6k ticket sales on BMS and likely the same at offline counters, Babli is clearly the primary choice for the Bengali audience.
The film has its flaws, though. The chemistry between Subhashree and Abir is pleasing, and the acting has been quite playful. The main problem the movie faces is pacing—there’s little character development, and the film ends too quickly, which is always a downside.
However, one unbearable aspect is definitely the soundtrack; it was the worst part of the movie. If someone can’t properly utilize a talent like Shreya Ghoshal, there’s definitely a big problem.
That doesn’t mean Padatik won’t be a hit among fans, but it’s a movie that will likely gain more popularity on OTT platforms rather than in theaters. Padatik is one of the best biopics in the Indian subcontinent, and that needs to be acknowledged.
The film has everything—from politics to filmmaking. Srijit Mukherji skillfully captures the life and legacy of Mrinal Sen, and audiences who are ready for it should definitely watch it.
