Christopher Nolan’s biographic thriller movie ‘Oppenheimer’ starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (father of the atomic bomb) released last Friday on 21st July. And alongside ‘Oppenheimer’, Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy movie ‘Barbie’ featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling also started running in theatres.
Although both these films are chalk and cheese and as different as any two films can be, together, they are breaking many records at the box-office. The ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon as it is being called by many film enthusiasts.
Until now, that is, as per the film’s weekend box-office performance, ‘Oppenheimer’ has grossed more than $174 million globally against a budget of $100 million. On the other hand, ‘Barbie’ has collected more than $337 million at the box office worldwide against an estimated budget of $145 million. So, together, ‘Barbenheimer’ (Barbie + Oppenheimer) has collected a total of around a whopping $511 million.
‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ have also apparently helped achieve the feat of creating the fourth largest box office weekend of all time in the US. ‘Barbie’ has grossed $155 million in the US and ‘Oppenheimer’ has collected $80.5 million in their domestic territory. And interestingly, what ‘Barbie’ alone has collected just during its opening weekend, it is more than the combined box-office revenues of ‘The Flash’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ during their box-office runs.
On the reviews front too, both ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie’ have been ticking all the right boxes. On reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Oppenheimer’ has received a brilliant critics’ score of 94%. And ‘Barbie’ too is not far behind as the film has got an impressive critics’ score of 90% on the same website. Have you seen both these films? If yes, which one did you like more?
