Insane blockbuster “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie as the iconic title character, is set to make its digital debut on JioCinema on December 21. Following its theatrical release on July 21, where it achieved huge and surprising success, the film became a cultural phenomenon, especially with its simultaneous release alongside Universal’s Oppenheimer, creating the “Barbenheimer” trend that convinced audiences to experience both films as a double feature.
Gerwig’s live-action adaptation of the beloved fashion dolls by Mattel marks a significant departure from the previous computer-animated Barbie films. The storyline revolves around Barbie, portrayed by Margot Robbie, and Ken, played by Ryan Gosling, going on a journey of self-discovery triggered by an existential crisis. The supporting cast, including America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell, adds depth and humour to the narrative.
With a staggering global box office revenue of $1.44 billion, “Barbie” has secured its place as the highest-grossing film of 2023. Notably, it holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing film ever released by Warner Bros. and the 14th highest-grossing film of all time.
For those who may have missed its theatrical run, they may turn to JioCinema to watch the film on and after December 21. Barbie may not be a masterpiece like Oppenheimer but it certainly is an important film which every cinephile must watch.
