Barbara Gordon is finally getting her solo film. Yes, you heard it right folks. For the first time ever, A Batgirl Solo film is on the cards as the director duo, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who has recently gained international fame with Bad Boys for Life, joined hands with Warner Bros. to direct the movie.
A solo film of the superheroine, Batgirl is long due as the character regularly appeared in the animated series associated with Batman since 1968. The character was on and off in the DC Medias such as games like Injustice or series like Gotham. Joss Whedon was also in talks in 2017 for a screenplay on Batgirl but the project never panned out.
Those who are unfamiliar with the character, Batgirl aka Barbara Gordon is the daughter of Gotham City’s celebrated police commissioner James Gordon. She was initially the head of the Gotham City Public Library. Barbara Gordon is trained in Judo, Kung Fu, Karate and Jujutsu and continues to train in martial arts, despite being paralyzed from the waist down because of The Joker shooting her through the spinal cord. She also uses the alias Oracle as a technical advisor, computer expert and information broker. She’s been one of the most important characters of the Batman universe over the years.
Now, if we talk about the upcoming film, apart from Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Christina Hodson, who was responsible for the screenplays of earlier DC contents such as The Flash and Birds of Prey, will be donning the hat of the writer for this film. Born in Morocco and studied films in Belgium, Adil and Bilall have started their careers by directing episodes of FX crime drama Snowfall and now they are busy in directing Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series Ms. Marvel and a musical family drama Rebel.
The cast of the Batgirl movie is not yet confirmed but reportedly Kristin Burr, the maker of Emma Stone’s upcoming Cruella, will be producing the film along with HBO Max who will be distributing the same.
As Batgirl was last seen in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin in a live action full-fledged avatar as a slightly different persona of Barbara Wilson, portrayed by Alicia Silverstone, it would be extremely nostalgic and interesting to see who the makers approaches for the role of the female caped crusader and how they approaches the story to connect the same with the ongoing DC universe.
